Keepsake Book

I read my sister's blog about her heirlooms. So I thought I'd share my idea.

I'm a scrapaholic. My daughter and I get together as often as we can (which lately hasn't been possible much) and we stay up all hours of the night to scrapbook all our precious photographs as we laugh and enjoy the company. I have albums of grand kids, my kids when they were young, the month long vacation Jim and I took across the states, and just albums for all occasions and each one of them is put together with my love of scrap booking. Each page is decorated and journaled.

When my mom and dad both passed onto the blessed world of eternity there was the duty of going through all the things left behind. Some things were given to each of us in the prior years by them but there were things left to go through. As my sisters and I were going through my mom's jewelry we realized then that there were items we had no idea where she got them or when or who from. Then a year later when dad passed on we had to go through the entire house.

My sisters are older than me and they remember more of the history of things than I did.

I ended up bringing things home with me as both my sisters and brother did.

As time passed by I kept thinking of things that I have that I wanted to pass on to my children and grandchildren . Things passed down from my parents, things passed down from my mother in law and things that I've kept since my children were born.

I kept trying to think of a way to help my children remember what each and every one of these items meant, when they were acquired and how. Things like the Indian doll that I got when I was three years old. Things like the crocheted dress my sister made for my daughter when she was a baby. Things like the compact that my mother in law gave me to hold as something old when I got married. Many of these things are in a cedar chest that my parents gave me when I graduated from high school which is yet another thing to pass on. Other items are displayed around the house or in my jewelry box.

I wanted my children to know what all these things were when they have the chore of going through them after I pass on to the Heavenly world. I wanted them to have an easy time of it and not sit and wonder "why did mom keep this!" or "which one of us wore those shoes?".

SO, it finally came to me what to do......scrapbook of course! So I went through my house and took photos of all the things I could think of that I want them to know about. I then bought a small album with the inscribed words on the front that say " Forget me Not" which I thought was fitting.

Then placed a photo on each page and journaled under the photo telling the story of the item. It's not as decorated as my other albums but it does it's purpose.

Now they can just grab that album as they go through everything when that time comes and wa-la, the story is told.

3 burns

Well isn't this a fine day!
I posted earlier about today at the eye doctor. I forgot to mention that while I'm at the doctor getting the prescription for my eye drops that burn the eyes I smell something bad and hear voices talking about a fire. There was a car on fire in the parking right in front of the office! They opened up the hood and there were flames shooting up because the motor was burning! They put it out with fire extinguisher before it got worse.
So after all that, tonight I thought I'd cook myself some yummy egg rolls. I like to cook them up in a skillet with olive oil to make them crispy. So as I go to turn them over a blast of oil shoots out and hits the underside of my left arm right under the wrists. OUCH! I immediately put an ice pack on it. Find the first aid kit and pour burn ointment all over it and wrap in gauze. I've been sitting here all night with an ice pack on it because the burn is about two inches long and painful! No blisters yet so hopefully tomorrow will be alright.

They , whoever they are, say that everything comes in threes so hopefully I'm done now! I still haven't put those drops in my eyes! Think I'll start that prescription in the morning!

The eyes

So I had my routine eye exam today.

I wear glasses so that I may see up close. Comes in handy for simple things like reading, using computer, reading the labels on clothes when I shop so not to come home with items three sizes too small, menus, etc.

It's always so fun at the eye doctor.
You get to sit in so many different chairs and stick your forehead to a numerous types of gadgets and watch all sorts of flashing, beaming, moving objects, ya know sort of like a video game.

Then they take photos of your eye so you can see all the gross looking red blotches and veins in a blown up size.
The best part is putting those drops in your eyes that numb them and turn your eyes a pretty yellow and make them feel like sandpaper.

So after two hours of thrills I get to pay them $137 for a new set of glasses-- because the my vision has "slightly" changed for the worse. Thank goodness for the insurance coverage for the balance of charges!

AND for an extra bonus I get to add another prescription to my cabinet shelf! My eyes are having trouble creating tears, which explains the VERY uncomfortable dryness I've had on top of the extremely dry weather!

So the doctor gives me this prescription for Restasis. It's an eye drop that is suppose to relieve the dryness. Hey, that should be great right?
Well, he then tells me that for the first FOUR weeks using it there is a good chance that I will have the side effect of a burning sensation when I use it.......and it needs to be used every morning and every night.........oh yeah, how fun is it going to be to have flames shooting out of my eyes twice a day!

To make it all an even more rewarding moment he tells me that chronic dry eyes is a common event as "we" get older.

I can't wait for my yearly Pap Smear!

Wallpaper Fun

So why is it so fun to play around with this background wallpaper on my blog! I've sat here in a vegetated state scrolling through all the different backgrounds to choose from for quite some time now..........in fact I've lost track of time!
So many choices! How can I choose just one!

It's not that I don't have other things to do. It is Sunday and I try not to do housework but there is planning menus, sewing, scrapbooking, reading, gathering up what I might sell on ebay next and taking photos to post on my page..the list goes on...... BUT I sit here staring at those backgrounds as though it will make a dramatic difference in my life.

Perhaps the person reading my blog will become so inspired they will redecorate their entire house. Maybe with the decorative sides my spelling and grammer will inprove. I'm sure that with this adorable blog everything I write is much more interesting to read!

So I missed my calling. I should of learned how to make these wonderful decorative backgrounds and started my own business. Then I could sit and play with them all day long and get paid!

But truth is that my grandchild will probably learn how to do all of this and more before I can figure out how to change the layout of my blog!

My 2cents Worth

My daughter home schools her three children, so for some reason that seems to make many people think they can judge, criticize and throw out all the negative advice they have bottled up inside them. The main thing they all seem to be the most concerned about is that home schooling will populate the world with stuffy snobs unable to communicate with anyone around them.

I just want to know one thing. WHAT class in public school TEACHES how to socialize? I completed twelve years of public school and came out as one of the most shy insecure people you could know.
What class TEACHES how to be polite?
What class TEACHES how to communicate well with others?
What class TEACHES how to like yourself for who you are?
What class TEACHES how to go out into the world and get a job where you can work at a decent pay even if you can't afford to get a college degree?
What class TEACHES family values or values of any kind?
What class TEACHES you how to discover what your talents and interest may be outside of academics?

NO, instead they have taken out all the classes that give you the chance to learn to love music, dancing, sports, or any other talents or interests that may give you self esteem.
NO, instead they throw you into large crowded rooms so you can get bullied and teased if you don't fit into their clicks.
NO, instead you are placed under tremendous pressure to be just as successful as the student who may have the photographic memory and gets a perfect score no matter how difficult it may be for you.
NO, instead you are put under peer pressure to experiment in whatever every bad seed out there may try to do to influence you so that you may fit in with what THEY consider cool.
NO, instead you are shuffled along in the herd to the next class and the next step whether or not you feel you learned the last step because if you aren't pushed into the next class the schools will loose their funding for that new student that takes your , SO when you get to that next step and your already behind you can feel like more of a failure.

When did it become the right thing for parents to wash their hands of their children's education and well being? When did the word "family" become a bad word? Why shouldn't parents have the right to choose their child's education and the right to choose to change it if they feel things are not as they should be for the sake of the child?

I worked in a grammar school before. I saw all the paperwork with the misspelled words as the teachers turned in their paperwork. I heard all the remarks made about the children they LABELED trouble makers or irritating.
Teachers are just people. They are not perfect. Some should not be teaching , they are burned out, yet they continue because it is their "career" and they feel what else would they be doing. I say this because for eight years I witnessed it.

Yes, there are good teachers, but there are good parents that can teach also.

I have five grandchildren. Three are home schooled and two are in public school. I pray the best for all of them. I've seen my grandson who is only in second grade come home with "red cards" and have received them because he could not sit still in his chair... since when is it normal for a 7 year old boy to sit perfectly still? Who decided that a child could not hear and learn while his leg is hanging off the chair and swinging?

My three grandchildren that are home schooled are the busiest, most social children I've ever known. They participate in baseball, soccer, basketball, piano lessons, music lessons, ballet, theater, gymnastics and church activities. They are at an average or above average grade level in fact my second grade granddaughter is reading at the the top of a third grade level.

Whether it be public school, private school or home school isn't it the DUTY of a parent to participate and to step in to be sure the child is getting the very best education? So why should home school be less? In fact it should be more because these children are given a one on one teaching without the peer pressure, without the bullies and social clicks to worry about. Instead they can LEARN what they are suppose to be learning and leave the socializing to other activities.

As far as learning how to be social..........why shouldn't parents be able to choose the positive side of social activities for their children and be the filter for who their children hang out with.

Isn't this all suppose to be what is best FOR THE CHILD?
